Hello, everybody!
I have not received anything like what was mentioned by the topic starter but I do get some requests for the translation and if I start asking them more questions, they just give me attachment file for translation and say they will pay with bank money order or bank transfer, what happened with other ways of payments that seem to be safer and more... modern? like cash-app or paypal. Does it sound suspicious for you guys here too?

A scammer with real contact details? Apr 4

And mentioned in the local press?

This church is about about as much "real" as at least half of the agencies posting jobs.

If you have a potential interest in that kind of texts, FIRST make sure that whoever claims to represent them really has authority to do so.

But then even very "real" clients are not necessarily the kind of clients that you want to have. See my previous post.

BTW their website is in fact https://gclchurch.us/ while the subdomain https://en.gclchurch.us/ is the English version of it.

A very dangerous sect Apr 22

Hello,

I have been contacted too. They sent me a sample to translate. It was in English, a translation from a Chinese text, and they wanted me to translate it in French. There was a glossary. I started reading the glossary and I was a bit intrigued. As a Christian myself, I didn't quite understand some translations.

I asked for more information regarding the translation, and the answer was:
"What you are translating are live sermons delivered by Christ of the last days."

And I did my research. And I found that behind all this, there is a sect called "The Church of Almighty God", and it is quite disturbing. Here is a link if you want to know more: https://www.gotquestions.org/Church-of-Almighty-God.html .

Have a good day,

Célia Thévenet.

Scam Apr 26

I received the same e-mail but to translate into Portuguese, after a few questions about the project, I sent her the link to this discussion. She stopped answering me.

This awfully sounds like if they contact you, it's because you're the 'chosen one' to do the Lord's work.
Labour of love, if nothing else... it should be sin to even consider getting paid, and you can't scam the God!
I expect many would give their right arm to be 'chosen' by the divine authority.

I was also contacted by this organisation. They seem to be operating under various different names, in my case it was The Church of Dawn’s Light. I did not get the impression that they were scammers, but that they are a dangerous sect. All of these different churches seem to be operating under the umbrella of Eastern Lightning. I found more info here: https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Eastern_Lightning#Sneaky.2C_superficially_independent_websites_with_unclear_relation_with_the_sect
see also the section Translation, which mentions that they use professional translators for their translations. Googling Eastern Lightning returns “interesting” results.
When I confronted them about my suspicions, I never heard back, which I took as confirmation. So it seems if you are tempted to work with them, non-payment won’t be the issue, but you have to decide whether you want to actively contribute to their doings.

So it does involve religulous fanaticism after all? Jun 11

I said as much about getting paid in my previous post. We had a Muslim version of that cult here in Turkey. The guy turned out to be a pimp. He recruited female translators and, for want of a better word, he 'transformed' them into weird creatures...
Though, I gotta say, 1000 years in prison was a bit harsh... poor chap.

Definitely a scam Sep 9

Their a complete scam. They make you do a sample translation work to "test your skills" but after that, you won't hear from them.

What you need to note is that before that, their communicative and seem professional but if we dig deeper, it's light as day that its a scam.

1. Vague company information: They used a generic Gmail address instead of an official domain, and their website didn’t match typical business standards.

2. Unpaid work requests: After initial talks, they asked for a “free sample” translation, which seemed to be their method of getting work done for free under the guise of a test.

3. Lack of Specificity: They avoided providing detailed information about the project or the company, instead using vague descriptions (e.g., "dozens of articles and two books").

Don't let the organized spreadsheets fool you nor their professional looking onboarding process. Thats part of the scam. Also, their using a Chinese brand name 翻译联盟 in their Linkedin which doesn't have any authentic posts nor real people associated with them.

Also, "Arabella" the Asian VA as they want you to believe is somehow from Spain in her Linkedin profile. Yet, her English is messed up and her work experience shows the name of the company she works for is "Various Companies". Wow.

If you encounter this or similar offers, be cautious and avoid sharing personal information or doing any free work. These hyenas use the same tactics but in different forms. Stay safe!

Contact Oct 7

Hello.
I have also been recently contacted by them - via LinkedIn. They didn't ask for books to be translated, but scripts.

I have performed a test translation and are waiting for the results.

Nothing seemed fishy so far, but now I'm reading this thread...

I've been contacted yesterday Nov 29

Dear All,

I'd like to inform you that I've been contacted yesterday by "Translation Marie" ([email protected]) looking for EN into FR translators.
Same kind of message as yours.

and gave me the following link: https://en.gclchurch.us/
One can see that the language pair doesn't fit the request (EN-NE), and in her reply she was looking for an English to Nepali translator and signed "Maire".

So, a scam without any doubt.
Furthermore, the first message was sent without any profile photo, unlike the second.

Thank you all for having raised this issue.

All the best
