Good day,
My apologies for a very basic question, I have been googling for a while, no luck.
I work in Editor and translate as usual.
I come across a TU which is served as 100%, but the context is different, so it must be changed.
I change the translation, validate the segment, and it gets added to the TM, so now I have two translations for the same source text.
Is there a way to avoid having multiple translations in the TM?

By default, Trados will overwrite the current translation when you change and confirm a new one. Do you have only one TM in your project? If you have one TM, this may happen when you insert a hit other than number 1 (for example you press Ctrl+2 to apply hit number 2) and then edit and confirm it. If you want to overwrite it, try to press Ctrl+1 first, then edit it and then confirm.

When I got on board with my current employer, I was lucky to get access to huge TMs that were full of translations based on which you could build a university course for aspiring translators who want to explore all the wrong ways to do their job. Most segments have no value, not even for technical terms other than those found in the glossary (and our glossary is profoundly flawed, too). So, my experience with those TMs suggests that Trados cannot reliably overwrite anything (although my settings expressly require it to do just that). If it sees a segment that's just a wee bit different from what you've entered before (like a hyphen in the beginning, an extra non-breaking space, end punctuation, a typo—you name it), it will return a legacy segment and won't show yours at all. You'll have to use a concordance to find yours. When I upload my new translations to our shared TM, I always check the "Overwrite" box. So, by and by, my translations begin to pop up more often (at least other translators are beginning to use them). You can only train your TM over time, at least if it's big ▲ Collapse | | | kd42 أستونيا Local time: 15:40 أنجليزي إلى روسي بادئ الموضوع

[Edited at 2024-11-07 22:27 GMT] I have 3 TMs, the reason -- concordance. Sometimes there are identical TUs in 2 or even 3 TMs, only one is overwritten. | |

Trados will only overwrite an entry if the TM is checked for updating. If you use 3 TMs but only one of them is updated, you will always have multiple translations.
If you only need 3 TMs for concordance, uncheck the Lookup boxes for the two TMs that are not updated.
