I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but this thread looks like the closest. The subject is self-explanatory. In some of my applications as a freelancer, the agency asks me to send a government-issued ID, which I never do and end up missing a chance. Do you think it is wise to entrust an official ID to a random person located in another country? It doesn't sound safe to me at all. Is it a standard practice?

Random people Nov 15

You should not work for random people. (-: You should check whether the person is a genuine client.

In many cases, you can send a copy of the ID with some of the numbers redacted (crossed out).

It's not a standard practice, but... Nov 16

Although I consider such a request excessive, if I'm available and the work is interesting, go over a certain amount of words and is well paid, I wouldn't say no. In Portugal producing one's ID card is normal. Contrary to what happens in some countries, we have no qualms producing our ID card. Watermark your ID Nov 16

Consider adding a watermark e.g. "For recruitment purposes only" when sharing such documents.

I NEVER send private documents Nov 18

I have a VAT registration number, and you can find me in the Danish Central Business Register.

I know requirements vary from country to country, but my private identity documents are none of my clients' business. In fact they do not tell clients anything they need to know. Clients are business partners, not employers, and they would probably be very surprised if I started asking for ID from them, or the CEO's passport before I worked for them. Why should they have mine?

Definitely a breach of security protocols (in most cases) Nov 18

Dear Ibrahim,

in most cases this should let all available alarm bells ring. The only cases where your ID is really needed is e. g. for access to a corresponding building, eg of an aircraft manufacturer, an airport etc. when the source text is not allowed to leave that "controlled" environment.

Dear Ibrahim,

in most cases this should let all available alarm bells ring. The only cases where your ID is really needed is e. g. for access to a corresponding building, eg of an aircraft manufacturer, an airport etc. when the source text is not allowed to leave that "controlled" environment.

In all other cases it is simply a sign that security protocols in that company are definitely not in place. A project manager asking this either has too much time or is not very well organized.

For a public tender where there is the self declaration that you pay ypur social insurance I add some statement of the payments of health insurance for the last year with the amounts as well parts of the info greyed out.

In all other cases: A test transaction via PayPal or wire transfer of 1 Euro something does the same. It shows both sides that the counterpart at least has access to an account and is who he states he is.

So the mini payment is the best protection against impersonation.

Best regards

Gerd
