The laboratory staff at Columbia University came to the conclusion that some components of ginger can ease breathing patients, during attacks of asthma.

The results of their research, they shared held in Philadelphia the world forum for thoracic community.

Bronchial asthma symptoms are spasms of the bronchial tubes that distribute air flows in the lungs. Common drugs against asthma from the group of beta-agonists have relaxing effect, acting on the muscles in the part of the respiratory system.

An employee of Columbia University anesthesiologist Elisabeth Townsend considers asthma one of the most common ailments of our age. Despite the fact that we know about it almost everything for almost half a century is only open a few drugs that help to alleviate asthma symptoms.

And now made an important discovery - purified components of ginger has been successfully promoted beta-agonists by relaxing the muscles of the respiratory system.

In these studies, the reaction of the tissue samples of the respiratory system that are exposed to acetylcholine, causing intense bronchial spasms. The researchers prepared several mixtures of the beta-agonist isoproterenol and the three different components of ginger: 8-gingerol, 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol. These compounds affect the control tissue samples, recording the reaction of the muscles for later analysis. Compared to using pure generally recognized medicines, efficiency of preparations was significantly increased when adding components of ginger. From among the three tested components of ginger were the most effective 6-shogaol.

The authors of the study noted the importance of further study of mechanisms affecting components of ginger on the respiratory organs. This knowledge can be used to create more effective drugs to facilitate asthma attacks.
